Founded in 1972 by Josip Gruzling, Nautican pioneered the use of hydrofoils to increase efficiency, and conducted groundbreaking research in hydrodynamics, naval architecture and computing. The company holds multiple patents for Gruzling’s unique designs, which include high-efficiency nozzles for boats and hydralift skegs for barges. In 2003, Nautican developed the Integrated Propulsion Unit, which combines the High Efficiency Nozzle, Triple Rudders, Stators, and Propeller in a fully assembled, ready-to-install unit. The independently tested systems have been shown to maximize power while reducing fuel consumption, offering an exceptional return on investment.

Nautican was acquired in 2013 and the head office moved from Vancouver, British Columbia to Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island in 2015.

Nautican Research & Development Ltd. made an assignment into bankruptcy on January 9, 2020 in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island. The trustee in the matter was PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP, Halifax, Nova Scotia.
